Welcome, I’m so glad you’re here!

Have you ever felt like you were gravely underprepared for life as an adult?  And thought to yourself “why wasn’t this taught in school” when coming up against an everyday task and feeling dumb for not knowing how to complete it?  Or, have you googled things that you are too embarrassed to ask even your closest of friends only to come up against unnecessarily long and detailed how-tos?

Hi, my name is Amy and I am the creator of Life Skills & Leisure. I had the idea to create a safe and nonjudgemental space for others to learn life skills in a clear and concise way because I  have encountered the situations above my entire adult life. My thought (and hope) is that I am not alone in these feelings and this will benefit others out there too. Some of the skills covered are as “simple” as boiling an egg and as complex as creating a bookclub, for example.

But, is creating a bookclub really a lifeskill?

Yes, it is. Part of life is learning and leaning into hobbies, crafts etc. that help you enjoy life. And oftentimes life skills even overlap with hobbies. It is important for our social and emotional wellbeing to feel empowered to complete skills of everyday life as well learning how to enjoy life.

Further, I would love to create a space where people do not feel dumb for not knowing hot to complete what society claims is a simple skill because the reality is that what is simple to one person is complex to another. As a mother of a neurodivergent kiddo and a late diagnosed ADHD-er myself I am continuing to learn that every brain is unique. We all learn in different ways but one thing almost all brains have in common is that real, meaningful learning happens when a nonthreatening and nonjudgmental environment is provided.

That is what I hope to cultivate here.

Each skill will be provided in a clear step-by -step written format, with pictures and a linked video as well as other resources that may be helpful. As I learn this new skill of building a website and service I will hopefully learn new ways to accommodate other learning styles and needs.

I hope this becomes a safe and welcoming place for all who happen across this little corner of the internet.  Amy
