Understanding Their Definition and Impact on Success
As we embark on our journey to create a supportive and inclusive space for neurotypical and neurodivergent individuals alike here on Life Skills and Leisure, it is crucial to understand the definition of a life skill.
A life skill is any task or know-how to successfully move through day-to-day life either in the home or out in public. It is essential to learn these skills or at least know how and where to seek assistance in completing these skills to gain independence and success in life. Having confident knowledge and ability in these skills creates a real sense of empowerment which can lead to lower anxiety levels and greater satisfaction in life. Basic life skills can be the building blocks to hobbies, leisure activities and better connections to others.
Not all life skills are created equally for each person. As I have mentioned before, everyone’s brain works and learns in different ways. Someone who can easily calculate a difficult math problem, might have a lot of challenges surrounding basic cooking skills. Or someone who can easily and happily host a party, may not know how to address envelopes to send out invitations for said party.
We are all so unique in what knowledge we bring to the table, whether that be from genetic makeup, culture background or different types of upbringing. Whatever the case we all deserve access to a non-judgmental place to seek out skills we need extra support around.
